Fundraiser to Send Warrior Surf Foundation Veterans Retreat

MEX 1 COASTAL CANTINA LAUNCHES FUNDRAISER TO SEND WARRIOR SURF FOUNDATION VETERANS ON ULTIMATE SURF RETREAT TO NICARAGUA

Charleston, S.C.- OCTOBER 26, 2020– Folly Beach-based nonprofit Warrior Surf Foundation (WSF) is excited to partner with Mex 1 Coastal Cantina to announce a fundraiser to send eight deserving Veteran members of the WSF program, as well as WSF crew  to Thunderbomb Surf Camp in Nicaragua next June. Kicking off on November 11 for Veteran’s Day, $1 from every taco sold from Mex 1’s new Thunderbomb Taco (made with Baja battered Wahoo, red cabbage, pineapple salsa and guac sauce) sold through the end of 2020 at all three Mex 1 locations (Sullivan’s Island, West Ashley and Park West) will go towards the cost of food, airfare, accommodations and experiences for this week-long intensive retreat. 

“We are so grateful to be approached by Mex 1 yet again to help fund this incredible retreat for eight Veterans in our program,” shares Founder and Executive Director Andy Manzi. “I will personally never forget my first surf trip to Latin America, as it was a trip that forever changed my life for the better.”

“We are stoked to be continued supporters of Warrior Surf’s incredible mission,” shares Mex 1 Marketing and Beverage Director Morgan Hurley. “We hope Charleston locals and visitors not only try this craveable new taco, but also consider donating a specific experience for a Veteran attending the Camp like a meal or yoga session.”

Warrior Surf Foundation has served over 500 Veterans struggling with PTSD and other mental health challenges to-date through its surf therapy, yoga and wellness programs. This will be the nonprofit’s first of hopefully many retreats to Thunderbomb Surf Camp- where Veterans will focus on healing through psycho-education, positive psychology and resiliency. How to Make a Mex 1 Margarita

How do you make the perfect Mex 1 Margarita you ask? Ditch the sup-par drinks and make your own Award Winning Best Margarita in Charleston from home with our simple step-by-step directions. There’s a reason we’ve been voted number one, and that comes down to fresh ingredients and 100% blue agave tequila. Let’s take a look at what you’ll need and get shakin’!

Ingredients:

Step 1

Grab your shaker and add one shot of 100% blue agave tequila. At Mex 1, we prefer to use Lunazul Reposado Tequila. This tequila is 2x distilled in the state of Jalisco, the heart of tequila. This family has a tradition of over 200 years of making tequila, making them easily the oldest tequila anywhere. “American oak imbues this tequila with the layers of semi-sweet vanilla, fruit and spice while maintaining the classic, earthy agave taste and leading to a smoky finish.” 

Step 2

Add your Mex 1 Margarita Mix! To get the exact taste of Mex 1 we are now offering our mix bottled up to go. Afterall, we can be pouring out ALL of our secrets! Make sure to keep your margarita mix chilled and also give it a quick shake to mix it back up. Add 4 ounces of the mix to your shaker. If you’re eyeballing it, go with 2 parts margarita mix to one part tequila. If you’re looking for a weaker margarita, go with 3 parts to one part. 

Step 3

Add ice to your shaker. Shake it up for about 5-10 seconds until fully chilled. 

Step 4

Are you a salt person? A no salt person? Adding salt to a margarita intensifies the sour and sweet flavors. This tempers any bitterness making the sweetness and sourness of your cocktail seem brighter. At Mex 1, we use a tall glass with a half rim of salt to please every palate. 

Step 5

Lastly, pour it in and garnish it with a lime. Best enjoyed with a plateful of our Tailgate Nachos!

How to Build the Ultimate Nacho Bar

What’s the best way to kick off a party? Whether your planning for gameday, Cinco de Mayo, or any other party for that matter, wow your guests with the Ultimate Nacho Bar! Here at Mex 1 Coastal Cantina, we make the prep work a breeze by providing fresh and local ingredients made in house daily. Allow your guests to choose from a variety of toppings while following these steps below.

Step 1

This is the most important step to creating the ultimate nacho experience. It takes a balanced foundation to be sure every chip will be properly topped. So after opening up your bins, you’ll need to smooth out your chips into a flat, even layer. (The chips may have shifted during the ride to your tailgate.)

Step 2

Open up the queso container and make sure it’s a nice, spreadable consistency. If your queso has cooled during the trip from our kitchen to your tailgate, pop it in the microwave for 45 seconds and give it a stir. If it’s nice and melty, you’re ready to pour! 

Step 3

Pour the queso over both bins of chips and try to get a nice, even coverage of cheese. The goal: maximum cheesy goodness atop every chip. 

Step 4

Take a spoon and grab the black beans, pico de gallo, and jalapenos. Spoon out these yummy toppings and, just like the queso, you’re going to want to have an even cover of toppings. Pro tip: add as many jalapenos as you can stand – extra fresh jalapenos pack an extra spicy punch!

Step 5 (optional)

Got Protein? Let’s add it now! Spoon out your protein right on top of your creation and let’s move on to our next step!

Step 6

It’s time for the grand finale. You’re going to need to grab your spoon and plop the sour cream and guacamole in nice little spoonful sizes all over your masterpiece.

Step 7

The time has finally come. It’s time to dig in! You could tell your friends and family that the ultimate nachos are ready…or you could just dive right in and keep them all to yourself.
