In 2012, Dave and Chrissy Lorenz partnered with Roddy Smith to open Mex 1 Coastal Cantina near Avondale area of Highway 61 in West Ashley, SC. Since it’s inception, the goal has been to serve fresh, flavorful Baja Mexican fare and premium tequilas in a friendly, laidback, ‘come as you are’ atmosphere – a vibe that embodies the surfing and coastal lifestyle paralleled to the Baja Peninsula culture.
Mex 1 takes pride in serving fresh, locally sourced produce, much of which is found right here in South Carolina’s backyard. Enjoy the simplicity of natural protein and produce coming together, all food is free of heavy sauces and chicken and pork is smoked on-site. Drop in and you will find a variety craveable eats, including tacos, quesadillas, baja rice bowls, tortas and fresh salads, all made in-house daily to ensure each bite is just as fresh as the last.
There’s nothing better than a cocktail to sooth your soul. Mex 1 uses only 100% agave tequila and all margaritas are made with freshly squeezed juices. Mex 1 has an extensive tequila, rum and mezcal selection and offers a number of house-infused tequilas including: pineapple, pineapple habanero, berry serrano, strawberry cucumber and jalapeno.
Smith and the Lorenz’s have proudly captured the spirit of that on the Baja Peninsula and brought it home. From the sunset wall behind the bar bathed in oranges, yellows and reds to the authentic surfboards throughout the restaurant and surf videos playing on the TV’s, you could swear the smell of the ocean is in the air. In the summer of 2016, Mex 1 opened its doors at a second location in Sullivan’s Island, SC. The two sister restaurants are a ‘go-to’ destination in their respected beach communities; serving flavorful Baja Mexican fare, fresh margaritas, and a relaxed atmosphere. Drop in- Chill out.
