In 2012, Dave and Chrissy Lorenz partnered up with Morgan Hurley and opened Mex 1 Coastal Cantina near the Avondale area of Highway 61 in West Ashley, SC. Since its inception, the goal has been to serve fresh, flavorful Baja Mexican fare and premium tequilas in a friendly, laidback, ‘come as you are’ atmosphere – a vibe that embodies the surfing and coastal lifestyle paralleled to the Baja Peninsula culture. From day one the community embraced the fresh take on tacos, rice bowls and quesadillas and the selection of infused Tequilas and memorable margaritas. The three have proudly captured the spirit of the cantinas on the Baja Peninsula and brought it home. From the sunset wall behind the bar bathed in oranges, yellows and reds to the authentic surfboards throughout the restaurant and surf videos playing on the TV’s, you could swear the smell of the ocean is in the air.

In the summer of 2016, Mex 1 opened its doors at a second location in Sullivan’s Island, SC. It was an exciting opportunity to join a fun, lively beach community with an incredible food scene. The Baja style eats, the heavy surf vibe and the wall of Tequila was a welcome addition for tourists and locals alike. During this time, Mex 1 won some awards from Best Margarita at the Charleston Margarita Festival to Hurley winning the official cocktail of the Charleston Wine and Food Festival. With Sullivan’s Island being a beach community, the crowds ebb and flow during the summer and winter months just like the tides at the beach. These slower months gave Mex 1 the opportunity to do some fundraising and started Mex 1 Sessions with Ear for Music to benefit Carolina Studios. They have been lucky enough to bring in world class bands from Drivin’ N Cryin’, Sol Driven Train, the Blue Dogs and Stop Light Observation to name a few. Bringing Mex 1 to Sullivan’s Island was the best fit to bring the brand to the beach.

Good things come in threes right! In 2018, Mex 1 Coastal Cantina opened its doors to its third location in a growing area of Mount Pleasant in the Park West neighborhood. This location brings all the vibes of the other two stores and adds in custom woodwork from an old, reclaimed boat, some incredible artwork and a big deck for the crowds to navigate towards. There is a great community feel in Mount Pleasant and Mex 1 immediately dove in by being the premier sponsor for the Wando Football Team and providing multiple spirit nights to the local schools among other charitable organizations. Just like Mount Pleasant is growing, Mex 1 is excited to grow its roots and relationships in the communities around the restaurant.
