About Us

Mex 1 Coastal Cantina offers Mexican food that is inspired by the great seafood and the arid-inland beef that is abundant in the Baja Peninsula. All of our food is made in house and prepped daily to provide a fresh, flavorful menu that you will crave. Menu offerings include a variety of tacos like the Bangin’ Shrimp and Mahi Fish tacos plus quesadillas, rice bowls, tortas and fresh salads. Equally important as our food are our drinks. Mex 1′s margaritas are made with only fresh lime juice and the highest quality tequilas and Mezcals which are often house infused with creative ingredients including Pineapple, Pineapple Habanero, Berry Serano and Jalapeno.

In 2012, Dave and Chrissy Lorenz partnered with Roddy Smith to open Mex 1 Coastal Cantina near the Avondale area of Highway 61 in West Ashley. The idea was to serve fresh and flavorful Mexican food and premium tequilas in a friendly, laidback, come as you are atmosphere. This summer, beach-goers and the Sullivan’s Island community will be able to enjoy flavorful Baja Mexican food and fresh margaritas as popular West Ashley restaurant, Mex 1, opens its second location in the recently closed SALT at Station 22 building.

The inspiration behind Mex 1 Coastal Cantina comes from ‘Mexico 1’, the interstate highway that parallels the coast of the Baja California peninsula. This strip of highway is known for amazing surfs spots and a bounty of taco shops and cantinas visited by surfers, locals, tourists, and wanderers.

At Mex 1 you’ll find your escape from everything that is stressing you out and making you“miss the moment”. We believe that good food and drinks in a good environment canchange your outlook.
